Personal information:

In my free time, I do modeling and sports. Currently, I am a kickboxing and taekwondo master, 2nd dan black belt. I have a restless cat and a guinea pig.
I did not choose the profession of a veterinarian based on my heart. I really wanted to be a police dog handler and went to classes, courses, and competed in agility competitions with dogs; but my uncle persuaded me, a little girl of 16 years old, who knew absolutely nothing, to go to the clinic as a volunteer. This is where that love was born, that fire in my soul that has been burning even brighter over the years. I adore that moment when the expectations and hopes of the owners, the team’s confidence in the result, and the work of the doctors win! I love when we make a treatment plan and develop everything step by step and those good, real emotions of people after recovery, those photo letters of healthy patients and incredible meetings just on the street.. just talking.

What does care mean to you?
I always form several treatment options: they can be both conservative and surgical. I don’t like to do radical methods right away when there are other options. Therefore, care for me is not to harm the animal. Every life is important to me, and that these cute tails continue to give their love to their family. We conduct all examinations, communicate about the anamnesis, collect all the information, additional diagnostics – an important point in making a diagnosis – and only then do we begin full treatment. Of course, in an urgent situation, the actions are different and in the intensive care unit of the clinic.

About the Doctor and Her Role in the Clinic

Oksana Mykolayivna Vikhrova is a small-animal surgeon with nine years of clinical experience, focusing on surgery for companion animals as well as rodents and rabbits. Within our multidisciplinary veterinary hub in Kyiv she serves as both an operating surgeon and a clinical lead who helps shape diagnostic pathways, treatment planning and internal protocols to ensure consistent care quality.

In practice, Oksana Mykolayivna Vikhrova emphasizes thorough diagnostics: she collects a full history, orders targeted laboratory and imaging tests, and discusses the range of treatment options with owners. This structured approach yields several management scenarios — from conservative medical care to surgical intervention — so the team can choose the safest and most effective plan for each patient.

Teamwork and standardized protocols are central to how the clinic functions. Surgeons, anesthetists, emergency clinicians and nurses operate under coordinated workflows that prioritize patient safety during anesthesia and post-operative recovery. Our emergency and critical care unit follows clear action algorithms to stabilize animals quickly and prepare them for further treatment.

Oksana’s clinical work integrates surgery with therapy, hematology and resuscitation skills, allowing comprehensive case assessment and dynamic treatment adjustments. She places strong emphasis on communication: providing clear explanations, outlining risks and benefits, and making sure owners understand the proposed plan and expected outcomes.

The clinic adheres to broadly recognized international principles of veterinary care — continuous professional development, documented protocols and quality control of procedures. Oksana’s role extends beyond performing surgeries: she mentors junior staff, contributes to diagnostic strategy development and helps maintain high standards of patient management across the team.

As a result, animals treated in our hub receive not only surgical care, but also individualized pre-operative assessment, an evidence-based post-operative plan, hematologic monitoring and sensible follow-up recommendations. That integrated care improves clinical outcomes and builds owner confidence in the clinical team in Kyiv.

Owner Questions & Practical Answers

How urgent is it to proceed if the vet recommends surgery?

If a veterinarian recommends urgent surgery, act promptly — in the first sentence this means delay can increase risks to the animal. Oksana Mykolayivna Vikhrova and the team will stabilize the patient, perform any necessary rapid diagnostics and explain why immediate intervention is advised. They will outline potential outcomes with and without surgery, discuss alternatives when available, and prepare the animal to minimize anesthesia and surgical risks.

Are pre-operative tests always needed for rodents and rabbits?

In most cases pre-operative tests are recommended because they identify hidden problems and reduce anesthesia risks. Oksana Mykolayivna Vikhrova tailors the testing panel to the species and the clinical situation — minimal baseline checks for healthy small patients, more extensive workups when there are signs of systemic disease or heightened risk, ensuring safer anesthesia planning and intraoperative management.

What does post-operative care look like at your clinic?

Post-operative care begins immediately: first sentence — the patient is stabilized in recovery under the supervision of clinicians and technicians. Our protocol includes pain control, monitoring of vital signs and blood parameters, owner instructions for medications and activity restrictions, and scheduled rechecks. We adjust treatment based on recovery progress and provide guidance for wound care, nutrition and any necessary rehabilitation.

Can medical and surgical treatments be combined?

Yes, combined medical and surgical approaches are often required: in the first sentence — medical therapy frequently prepares the patient for surgery and reduces complication risks. In routine practice, Oksana Mykolayivna Vikhrova coordinates multidisciplinary care so that medical stabilization, hematologic correction and targeted therapy are integrated with the surgical plan according to clinic protocols to achieve the best possible outcome.
